What happened

A strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the bacterium that causes diphtheria, has been isolated from a patient in intensive care at Udine hospital. David Turello, Director of Health at the University Health Board Friuli Centrale, made the announcement. Epidemiological surveillance by the Department of Prevention is now underway, aimed at containing the spread of the pathogen through any contacts made by the patient.
