What happened

The incident reported involves the loss of life due to twin bomb explosions that occurred in two displaced persons’ camps located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to reports from government officials, the United Nations and an aid group, at least 12 individuals, including children, succumbed to these explosions, while a minimum of 20 people sustained injuries. The targeted sites of these explosions were the Lac Vert and Mugunga camps, situated near the city of Goma, North Kivu province.

The attackers have not been officially identified, but both the Congolese government and the United States have accused the Rwandan army and the M23 rebel group of being responsible for targeting the camps sheltering thousands of refugees. Rwanda promptly refuted these allegations, blaming the assault on the militias allegedly supported by the Congolese army, expressing this view in a statement issued on behalf of the Rwandan government.
