French power generators increased nuclear output in 2024 compared to previously, helping the country re-establish itself as continental Europe’s largest producer and exporter of clean electricity. Indeed, French energy producers have recovered from the series of problems that have held back nuclear production in recent years. French nuclear reactors have faced a number of production problems since 2022, such as prolonged maintenance problems of aging reactors. For this reason it is important to underline that nuclear energy represents around 70% of France’s electricity supply and consequently such a sharp collapse in nuclear production has forced France to increase the use of natural gas and other energy fuels.
