What happened

The International Health Regulations National Focal Point (IHR NFP) notified the WHO about a case of human infection with an influenza A(H9N2) virus in Vietnam. The patient is a 37-year-old man from Tien Giang Province, Vietnam. His condition deteriorated, and he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia with bilateral pleural effusions, leading to his transfer to the intensive care unit. The patient lives near a poultry market where birds are traded daily in front of his house, but the investigation didn’t find evidence linking his infection to animal transmission. This is the first reported case of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) in Vietnam.
