What happened

On the 9th of April, an explosion occurred at a hydroelectric power plant at the Suviana reservoir in the Apennines near Bologna, Italy. According to a press release from Enel Green Power – the Enel Group company dealing with the development and management of energy generation activities from renewable sources – “(…) a fire affected a transformer at the Bargi hydroelectric power plant”. The causes of the incident are currently unknown.

Experts have suggested that a mechanical malfunction may have been the cause of a short circuit in the turbine alternator. The analysis of the parameters recorded by the SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system, which was acquired by the judicial authorities, may provide useful elements to clarify the causes and dynamics of the accident.

The official toll is seven deaths and seven serious injuries among the 15 technicians involved in the accident.
