Alteo, the world’s leading aluminium producer, is facing new charges after environmental groups and residents of the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône accused the company of dumping toxic waste into the Mediterranean Sea. The Marseille prosecutor’s office alleges that the plant has been discharging effluents that exceed the assigned emission limit values. The Alteo plant, after having discharged millions of tons of toxic red mud into the Rhône estuary, continued to pollute the Calanques national park, near Marseille, with its liquids.
