What happened

The Standing Committee of the State Council, led by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, has approved the construction of units 3 and 4 at China General Nuclear’s Taipingling nuclear power plant in Guangdong province, along with units 1 and 2 at China National Nuclear Corporation’s Jinqimen nuclear power plant in Zhejiang province. The Taipingling plant is planned to have six Hualong One reactors, with units 1 and 2 scheduled to start up in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Cold functional tests at Taipingling 1 have commenced. Additionally, approval has been granted for units 1 and 2 of the Jinqimen plant.

These developments follow the State Council’s approval of six other nuclear power units in 2023, bringing the total number of approved nuclear power projects for the year to ten, matching the number approved in 2022.
