What happened

Sweden’s largest egg producer, which has 20 percent of all laying hens in the country, has been ordered to cull all chickens to allow the plant to be completely cleaned. In previous outbreaks Swedish authorities tried to clean infected poultry houses but these operations were unsuccessful and now the only solution was to cull all chickens on the farm.

The spokeswoman for the industry organization told the Swedish news agency that ordinary consumers will not be affected by the culling. While the eggs are instead destined for the food industry where they have been heated to kill any salmonella and have been used in ready meals and powdered eggs.
