What happened

According to the weekly Bulletin “Communicable Disease Threats Report” (Week 44, 29 October − 4 November 2023), France reported the detection of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) virus in ticks of the species Hyalomma Marginatum, collected from cattle. This is the first detection of the virus in the country and to date, no human cases of locally acquired CCHF have been reported. However a specific communication for prevention, mandatory reporting and clinical management is being prepared.

Since the activity period of Hyalomma Marginatum adults is from April to July, the current probability of human infections from tick bites is considered very low and is not expected to increase until spring next year when new research will be conducted on the potential risks for human infections.
