6 patients with E. Coli were detected and one person has developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). 5 people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been recorded. The patients ranged in age from 2 and 35 years. The Statens Serum Institut is investigating the outbreak to try to identify the source of the infection.
The symptoms of E. Coli infections can vary but usually include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and fever. The illness can last 5 to 7 days. A small percentage of people diagnosed with E. Coli infection develop a life-threatening complication of kidney failure known as Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). Symptoms of HUS include fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, decreased frequency of urination, small bruising or unexplained bleeding, and pallor. In this case, patients must go to hospital immediately.
