What happened

China General Nuclear (CGN) has announced the successful installation of the containment building dome for unit 2 at the San’ao Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang province, China. This marks a significant milestone in the construction of the second of six HPR1000 (Hualong One) pressurized water reactors designed and planned for the facility. Unit 1 construction commenced in December 2020, followed by unit 2 in December 2021. Both units are expected to begin supplying electricity to the grid in 2026 and 2027. The San’ao plant represents China’s inaugural nuclear power project involving private equity participation.

The recently installed dome, weighing 238 tonnes and boasting a 45-meter diameter, signifies the completion of the civil construction phase and the commencement of equipment installation. The dome for unit 1 was set in place in November 2022.
