What happened

A man has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Terni (Italy) after cutting his knee as his condition was extremely critical. The skin on his leg had an unpleasant odor and was literally eating away tissue. This condition was due to infection with Vibrio Vulnificus, which is extremely rare in Italy.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that belongs to the Vibrio Group and can cause a number of infections, including gastroenteritis and skin infections. In some cases can cause necrotizing infections, commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria, which can be fatal. This bacterium is often associated with the consumption of raw, contaminated shellfish or crustaceans, but it can also enter the body through open skin wounds.
