Scientists at a research facility, run by the GSK Pharmaceutical Company, made the discovery after noticing that a colony of mosquitoes being used for drug development had stopped carrying malaria. The bacteria, which is naturally present in the environment, can reduce a mosquito’s parasite load by up to 73%. Tests are being conducted on the research field in Burkina Faso to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this new discovery.
