What happened

The state of Kerala reported the first cholera death of the year in Thiruvananthapuram. The victim is a 63-year-old retired Agriculture Department employee. He was admitted with fever into a private hospital on April 17 and passed away three days later. A post-mortem blood test confirmed cholera as the cause of death. The Health Department has started sample testing in the victim’s area to monitor the situation. No additional cholera cases have been reported, but health authorities implemented various precautionary measures.  Last summer, Kerala recorded a dozen cholera cases, including one death at a special school hostel in Neyyattinkara, a municipal town in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
