What happened

The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has confirmed 200 cholera cases and 13 deaths in the region since the beginning of the year. The directorate also reported over 1400 suspected cases. Of the confirmed cases, 118 were males and 82 females, with most affected individuals between 31 and 50 years old. Regional Disease Control Officer Christy Kodom-Achempem said that there were no recorded cases among infants under age one, while two cases were reported among children under 10. Commenting on the data, Health Promotion Manager Eunice Joan Teah Dzagli expressed worry that the country no longer practised the infection prevention measures (handwashing, personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness) it embraced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inability to sustain these measures has allowed diseases like cholera to spread rapidly. Mrs Dzagli also warned that choked gutters and drains create favourable conditions for disease transmission, especially during the rainy season. During floods, contaminated water from gutters and drains flows into homes, leaving behind harmful bacteria that can lead to infection. According to Dzagli, public markets also contribute to the problem, selling food items directly on the ground and vegetables grown with contaminated water.
