The Nasarawa State Government has confirmed a measles outbreak in a village in the Doma Local Government Area. Gaza Gwamna, Commissioner of Health, talked about the issue during an engagement meeting for the introduction of the measles and rubella vaccine into the routine immunization schedule. According to him, the outbreak is significant, with over 40 measles cases confirmed by local authorities. However, he assured that the state government would face the emergency with the same determination it showed toward the COVID-19 pandemic.
The measles outbreak comes at a time when Nasarawa authorities are intensifying efforts to immunize children against deadly diseases. In October, the state should start vaccinating all eligible children against rubella and could add the measles vaccine to the campaign if necessary. Gwamna said that the measles outbreak in the Doma area will not be a challenge for government immunization plans as a team of health experts has been sent there to contain the spread of the disease.
