What happened

An 11-year-old child has been seriously injured in a gas leak explosion in the small town of Monti, Gallura, Sardinia. The incident took place in the family’s home and preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion was caused by a spark from switching on a light. The young child, who was the first to enter the house, was caught in the explosion and suffered severe burns to his face and torso. According to the authorities, no one else was injured and the child was immediately taken to the ‘Giovanni Paolo II’ Hospital in the city of Olbia, where he is in intensive care. Due to the severity of the burns, a transfer to the ‘Gaslini’ Hospital in Genoa has been authorised. The residence has been secured and investigators have been called in to determine the cause of the gas leak.
