What happened

Since the beginning of 2025, France’s Réunion Island has confirmed 27,521 chikungunya cases, becoming the world’s leading disease outbreak. The latest data from the island show chikungunya further spreading among the population: from March 24 to 30, there were 6289 cases and 54 hospitalizations, with significant clusters found in Saint-Paul, Le Tampon, Saint-Denis, and Saint-Pierre. Local health authorities urge people to protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites or participating in a free vaccination program. Vaccinations are being held across the island for individuals aged 65 and with comorbidities and who have not previously contracted chikungunya.

In February, the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control CDC) issued a Level 2 Travel Health Advisory for tourists going to RĂ©union, recommending vaccination against chikungunya for adults and adolescents.
