What happened

An illegal landfill site containing hazardous waste has been identified and seized by members of the Guardia di Finanza of Adria, in the province of Rovigo, Italy. The site in question encompasses an area of approximately 400 square metres, situated on privately owned land within the municipality of Corbola. It had been utilised for waste management and treatment activities without the requisite authorisations. Inspection of the site revealed the presence of an open-air landfill, which contained over three tons of hazardous ‘special’ waste (used engine oil, tyres, mechanical parts of vehicles and household appliances) and ‘common’ waste (inert materials, pipes, plastics, ferrous materials, wood, and textile processing waste). This waste had been abandoned, creating a serious risk of environmental contamination. Two individuals, the land owner, and the manager, have been reported to the relevant judicial authority for their alleged complicity in the crimes of abandonment and unauthorised waste management.
