What happened

According to the WHO “Weekly Bulletin on Outbreaks and other Emergencies” (Week 39: 19 – 25 September 2022), on 1 August 2022, the Epidemic and Disease Control Unit of the Ministry of Health in Gambia reported an unusual event detected at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. A total of 75 cases with 50 deaths ( CFR 66.7%) have been reported. The median age is 17 years old and range from five to 46 months. The index case was traced to 4 July 2022.

Preliminary investigation was conducted to identify contacts of the cases. No similar illness among other siblings of similar age or other household members was detected.
