What happened

Kenyan health authorities have confirmed a cholera outbreak spreading across several parts of the country, with 97 cases and 6 deaths. According to the Ministry of Health, the most affected counties are Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi. Migori has reported 53 cases, 2 hospitalizations, and 1 death. Kisumu has seen 32 cases and 4 deaths, mainly concentrated in the Nyando and Muhoroni sub-counties. Nairobi has recorded 12 cases and 1 death, with cases spreading across several sub-counties, including Kasarani and Kibra.
The Ministry of Health has announced several measures in response to the outbreak. A rapid response team has been activated and is conducting active case searches and contact tracing. Healthcare workers are undergoing specialized training in case management, surveillance, and hygiene practices. The Ministry is also working with media outlets and community health promoters to spread key information about cholera prevention. Finally, health professionals are providing treatment for confirmed cases and prophylactic measures to those who may have come into close contact with infected persons.
To curb the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has published essential guidelines on personal hygiene and food safety, urging citizens to follow them. It has also recommended to seek immediate medical attention if showing signs of cholera, as the disease is deadly if left untreated.
