The second measles case in Michigan this year has been confirmed. The infected person is from Kent County and recently traveled abroad. During his travel he visited twice Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus. Dr. Adam London, Health Officer at the Kent County Health Department (KCHD), urged residents to check their immunization status and get vaccinated, especially if planning to travel abroad or to other US states with active measles outbreaks. The department made public a list of the locations visited by the infected person, including a restaurant in Kentwood, and invited people present there to monitor for symptoms for 21 days. If experiencing symptoms, they should call their healthcare provider before seeking in-person care to prevent further spread.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms begin 7-14 days after exposure, and they include fever, cough, and runny nose. After they begin, a red, blotchy rash covers the body, starting from the face and spreading to the arms, trunk, and legs.
