Angola has been battling a large cholera outbreak since January, with 8543 cases and 329 deaths recorded as of March 23. The outbreak has spread to 16 of the country’s 21 provinces, with individuals under 20 particularly affected. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on March 29 that the risk of further transmission in the country and surrounding areas remains “very high.”
Angolan health authorities are cooperating with the WHO and partner organizations to contain the outbreak through case detection, deployment of rapid response teams, community engagement, and vaccinations. However, the rapid spread of the disease, favored by poor sanitation and an ongoing rainy season, does not allow for a quick resolution of the crisis.
