Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health has reported five chikungunya and four zika cases. They are the first cases of the two diseases in the country in 2025. The chikungunya cases were detected in the Huetar Caribe, Central Este, Chorotega, and Pacifico Central Regions. Zika cases were instead found in Huetar Caribe and Central Sur Region. Both diseases are spread through mosquito bites. Chikungunya causes prolonged joint pain, while zika can provoke fetus malformations in pregnant women.
Adrián Avendaño, spokesperson of the Colegio de Microbiólogos, provided details about the detected cases and recommended several measures to prevent the two diseases, including using anti-mosquito products and wearing shirts or dresses with long sleeves.
