What happened

A new outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram has led to the deaths of 41 pigs, pushing the total toll in the state this year to 503. The outbreak was detected when laboratory tests in Guwahati confirmed ASF infection, leading to several efforts by local authorities to contain the spread of the disease. The deaths were reported in Lawngtlai town, which is near the borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
ASF is highly contagious and affects both domestic and wild pigs of all ages. It does not threaten human health, but it can decimate the pig population, causing severe economic consequences such as pork shortages and trade disruptions. There is no available treatment or vaccine, making prevention the only effective way to protect pigs. Strict biosecurity measures are essential to prevent the virus’s spread and safeguard the pork industry. Since 2021, ASF has become an endemic concern in Mizoram, provoking the deaths of many animals and significant financial losses for farmers.
