New Jersey toy company LaRose Industries is recalling hundreds of thousands of children’s jewelry design kits because they contain a toxic resin. In a news release on March 27, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said that over 200,000 Cra-Z Art Gemex and Gel2Gem kits were recalled due to the presence of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). It is a resin that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation if touched, ingested, or inhaled. HEMA has been banned in children’s products and its presence in the jewelry kits violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
The recalled kits were made in China and imported by LaRose Industries for the US market. They were sold nationwide between January 2023 and September 2024 at various retail chains and online through Amazon and other websites. Consumers should stop using them and contact LaRose Industries for a full refund. The company is contacting known purchasers directly.
