Nearly a month after detecting its first case since 1991, Slovenia has been declared free of Newcastle disease. In a statement, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said that the disease situation in the country has been resolved, adding no further comment on the issue. In February, a case of the disease was detected in a domestic poultry flock in the Podravaska region. There were 200 birds on the affected premises, of which 44 had died from the disease. The remaining birds were euthanised. Several control measures were implemented, including traceability, zoning, disinfection of the property, destruction of animal products, and disposal of carcasses and waste. At present, the source of infection remains unknown or inconclusive.
With the situation in Slovenia resolved, Poland and Israel are the only countries with active outbreaks of Newcastle disease. In October 2024, Brazil was declared free of the disease, while another emergency in Sweden was declared resolved earlier this year.
