There has been an aggressive outbreak of parvovirus in several districts of West Bengal, with many stray and domestic dogs succumbing to the disease. Veterinarians are concerned by the rapid spread of the virus, emphasizing the need for early detection and preventive measures. Parvovirus primarily targets dogs, leading to severe symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration. In many cases, the disease results in rapid deterioration and death. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are especially vulnerable to infection, which spreads through direct contact with ill pets or contaminated environments such as bedding and even human clothing.
At present, there is no cure for parvovirus. Treatment is only supportive, focusing on hydration and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. Severe cases require hospitalization with intensive care. The only effective defence is vaccination both for puppies and adult dogs. Experts also advise pet owners to be vigilant and seek immediate veterinary attention if they notice symptoms of the illness.
