Japanese restaurant chain Sukiya is enhancing food safety measures after discovering a rat in a miso soup served at one of its establishments. The incident happened in January at a Sukiya restaurant in Tottori prefecture. A customer found a “foreign object” in their miso soup bowl which later was confirmed to be a rat. According to Sukiya, the incident was caused by the error of a staff member who did not check properly the bowls prepared for the customers. The restaurant was immediately closed and reopened only after a thorough inspection conducted by local health authorities. Meanwhile, Sukiya has apologized to the public and instructed all its outlets to perform rigorous checks before serving food. It also plans to strengthen its management system to prevent similar incidents.
Sukiya has over 2000 restaurants in Japan and operates also in other Asian countries.
