The UAE welcomed a high-level Chinese delegation to discuss closer nuclear cooperation. The delegation, led by the Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment and Administrator of the National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) Dong Baotong, was received by the senior leadership of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), including chairman Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi. Both sides discussed enhancing cooperation in knowledge exchange, research and development, nuclear safety and security, nuclear non-proliferation, and regulatory frameworks for advanced nuclear technologies. The visit underlines the ongoing collaboration between China’s NNSA and the UAE’s FANR. In 2018, the two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on nuclear safety and non-proliferation, and in 2024 they negotiated a three-year action plan to establish a framework for cooperation in various nuclear regulatory sectors.
During the visit, the Chinese delegation toured FANR’s Emergency Operations Centre, where they were introduced to the UAE’s nuclear emergency preparedness and response system. They also provided details on the latest developments in China’s nuclear programmes.
