Kenya health authorities are dealing with a deadly outbreak of Kala-azar in Wajir County. The parasitic disease, caused by the Leishmania parasite, has killed so far 18 people and infected over 500. The outbreak started in December and has spread quickly to four sub-counties, forcing the local government to launch an emergency response initiative to curb it. According to medical reports, many patients recover with timely treatment, but delays in intervention can have fatal consequences. Dr. Ali, a pediatrician at Wajir County Referral Hospital, said the outbreak is severe and urged residents to seek immediate medical attention to avoid further deaths. To contain the spread of the disease, the Wajir County Government is stepping up efforts to raise awareness, encourage early diagnosis, and improve treatment access. It is also expanding hospital capacity, procuring essential medical supplies, and launching mass fumigation in affected areas. However, Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed pointed out that late health-seeking behavior remains a significant challenge, costing lives and limiting containment efforts.
The county government is calling on national authorities and health partners to help tackle the disease and prevent its transformation into a full-scale health crisis.
