What happened

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said a recent salmonella outbreak linked to recalled mini pastries appears to be over. According to the agency, the sources of the outbreak – which sickened 79 people – were likely Sweet Cream brand mini pastries and D. Effe T. brand lemon delight and tartlet with forest fruits. Both pastries were recalled after the first infected people were hospitalized. The outbreak lasted from September 2024 to February 2025, with most cases reported in December 2024. Of the 79 cases reported, 43 were in Quebec, 26 in Ontario, 4 in British Columbia, 5 in Alberta, and 1 in New Brunswick. The age of sick people was between three and eighty-eight, with most cases in women.
The first outbreak notice was issued in January 2025 after 61 salmonella cases were linked to the pastries imported from an Italian manufacturer. They were served in several venues, including hotels, hospitals, and retirement residences. US health authorities are also investigating several salmonella cases linked to mini pastries with the same genetic strain as the Canadian outbreak.
