Based on information from ANSA sources, the apprehension of a 46-year-old male of Moroccan descent, residing in the Brescia area, Italy, suspected of engaging in training activities related to international terrorism, was initiated through online surveillance conducted by the Cyber Security Operations Center of Perugia and the Digos of Brescia, Counter-terrorism Unit, in conjunction with the Central Directorate of Prevention Police and the Italian Central Service of Postal and Communications Police. Extensive investigation of the suspect, prompted by his affiliation with Islamic State-linked WhatsApp groups, confirmed the significant role of the Internet and global media networks in the propagation of jihadist ideology for recruitment and the promotion of terrorist acts associated with Islamic State. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Perugia, headed by Raffaele Cantone, considered the circumstantial evidence particularly severe, to the extent that an urgent detention order was issued for ‘a concrete risk that the foreigner could be responsible for more serious crimes.’
