Recall of children’s biscuits due to lead risk

Type of event:
Food Alert, Public Health, Chemical Risk

Victims

Wounded

Date

March 18, 2025

What happened

In light of the potential presence of lead, more than the permissible limits stipulated by current legislation, a batch of organic biscuits intended for children has been withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer. The manufacturer has taken the initiative to withdraw the product from the market and has issued a recommendation to consumers who have procured the biscuits to refrain from consuming them and to return them for a full reimbursement at the point of sale. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has specified strict limits for lead in foodstuffs, particularly those intended for infants and children, with a maximum permitted limit of 0.050 mg/kg. This is in place to prevent neurotoxic damage resulting from the presence of this heavy metal.
