What happened

In Mogadishu, an explosive device was detonated in proximity to the convoy transporting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud; the President sustained no injuries. Local media outlets reported that the incident occurred near the presidential palace. Journalist Mohamed Abukar Dabashe was killed as a result of the attack. According to a statement released on ‘X’ by presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein, the presidential convoy proceeded to Middle Shabelle to engage with military personnel participating in operations against al-Shabab despite the attack. Al-Shabab militants, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, have claimed responsibility for the attack via the ‘Telegram’ platform.
