On March 18, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree establishing the Nuclear Energy Agency. The new agency is chaired by Almasadam Satkaliyev and will oversee the country’s nuclear safety. The move follows Tokayev’s speech at the National Kurultai a few days ago and confirms Kazakhstan’s commitment to a new energy sector and sustainable economic growth. This will be pursued with the construction of three nuclear power plants and the creation of a full-scale energy cluster. The Nuclear Energy Agency will assume key responsibilities in the plan, supervising uranium mining, radiation safety, and the Semipalatinsk nuclear safety zone.
According to the decree, the President will cooperate with the agency’s chairman to prepare proposals for its structure and staffing, facilitating the inclusion of officials from the Ministry of Energy.
