What happened

Pakistani officials reported the killing of two police officers and one security guard in separate night attacks in the Karak and Peshawar districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This incident is believed to have transpired after a firefight with terrorists who had previously attacked two police stations and a Sui Gas installation with heavy artillery. In response, law enforcement officials pursued the assailants, leading to a tactical withdrawal to the surrounding mountains. One of the assailants was killed by the police during the chase. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attacks in a subsequent statement. The second attack was carried out by unidentified terrorists who opened fire at the Pajgi outpost of the Michi Gate police station in Peshawar. The police reacted immediately to the shots, forcing the attackers to flee. The third shooting took place in Dabkot village of Wana Tehsil in South Waziristan, carried out by unidentified assailants, killing a former policeman.

Pakistan ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025, with a 45 percent increase in deaths from terrorist attacks over the last year, bringing the total to 1,081. A report published by the Islamabad-based think tank, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) highlights a significant escalation in civilian casualties, particularly since February 2025.
