South Korea has reported a foot and mouth disease (FMD) case in a cattle farm in Jeollanam-do province. It is the first case in the country since 2023. Public authorities have stepped up measures to contain the outbreak, including the culling of all 180 animals on the farm. FMD hits cloven-hoofed ruminants like cattle and pigs, and its symptoms include fever and mouth blisters. Last week, Hungary detected its first FMD outbreak in over 50 years at a farm near the border with Slovakia. After laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the disease, the farm was closed, and the animals were culled to prevent the further spread of the outbreak.
In 2007, a large outbreak in the UK led to the culling of more than 2000 animals. Four years later, Bulgaria also culled hundreds of cattle after detecting some cases.
