What happened

Analyses carried out by the local health authorities at a nursery school in the municipality of Collesalvetti, in the province of Livorno, Italy, have confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water pipes. The school has been temporarily closed and the 40 children will be transferred to another school until the water pipes have been disinfected. A similar incident had occurred at the same school complex in September 2024, with a confirmed case of legionella in an adult. According to the indications received from the local health authorities, school attendance was not precluded in this case, as legionella is not transmitted through interpersonal contact.
