What happened

On the night of March 8th to 9th, a simulated attack was conducted at the Milano Rogoredo station, Milan, Italy, in preparation for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. The exercise involved the simulated detonation of a chemical explosive on a Frecciarossa train, with the participation of supplementary passengers. The objective was to simulate and evaluate the response and coordination proficiencies of law enforcement, emergency services, and Ferrovie dello Stato personnel, under the supervision of the Prefecture of Milan. Emphasis was placed on assessing the efficiency and rapidity of emergency protocol implementation. The simulation included the evacuation of the train following the detection of a potential explosive threat, the relocation of passengers to a designated secure location, the accounting of casualties, and their subsequent transfer to a Civil Protection assistance facility. The exercise, an element of the planning and organization for the forthcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and Paralympics, was executed without disruption to rail operations.
