What happened

The Zimbabwean Government has requested additional donor funding with a view to finalising landmine clearance in certain regions of the country, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has announced. The Ministry of Defence had initially aimed to complete demining operations in all affected areas by December of this year; however, this target is unlikely to be met due to financial constraints and setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the government has expressed its intention to request a three-year extension under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty. The removal of landmines is expected to enhance security and promote socio-economic progress in impacted communities. A demining forum held in Harare convened government representatives and international donors to explore funding opportunities. This development marks Zimbabwe’s sixth extension request since it became a signatory to the treaty in 1999.
