Anne Arundel County, one of the largest in Maryland, is still facing severe restrictions on public services following a cyber attack detected on 23 February. Although 911 and 311 emergency numbers are operational, many other government functions remain compromised as online systems are disconnected for security reasons. The attack, which is believed to be external, hit an area that houses federal facilities such as the NSA and the US Naval Academy. Authorities have not confirmed whether it was ransomware, while an investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage. No hacking group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident. Some services, such as tax payments and permits, are now being processed manually. The authorities are working to restore services, but there is no definite timetable. The cyber attack is part of a series of cyber incidents that have affected government agencies in several states, causing real disruption. The Missouri Department of Conservation is currently experiencing disruptions to essential services due to a cyber attack. Last week, the municipal courts in Cleveland, Ohio, experienced similar disruptions. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the cyber incident.
