What happened

A Memorandum of Cooperation was recently signed by Emirates Nuclear Energy Business (Enec) and Newcleo, a European advanced reactor company, to explore the potential of Newcleo’s Generation IV European lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR-AS-200) for utilisation in projects throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. By the provisions stipulated within the agreement, the two companies will undertake a collaborative exploration of prospects conducive to the advancement of LFR projects. Concurrently, they will engage in the formulation of strategies for reactor life management and nuclear fuel cycle closure for European projects. The collaboration can potentially engender considerable benefits in the broader energy sector. Under the terms of the agreement, Enec and Newcleo will collaborate in exploring the potential of LFR in facilitating the decarbonisation of sectors that are particularly challenging to decarbonise, including data centres, off-grid applications, and hydrogen production.
