Kenya health authorities have reported at least 36 cholera cases in Migori after declaring an outbreak of the disease in the county last week. All cases have been treated and discharged, except for one still hospitalised. The outbreak was declared on February 14 after a 20-year-old from Kuria East sub-county died and six other people were hospitalised with the disease. Since then, county authorities have been implementing measures to curb the spread, but it seems that the outbreak has still expanded into at least three sub-counties, including Suna West around the Masara goldmines. According to Mabel Chanzu, Migori county chief officer of public health, nine people have tested positive in Masara, but they were all treated and discharged. Other cases were reported in Kuria West, but Chanzu said the situation was under control. In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed their support to Migori health authorities in the fight against the outbreak. They also said to have donated various medical items like cholera beds and tents. Staff of the Society have been dispatched to Migori to assist local medical officers.
Clement Ayungo, Migori county director of public health, called on residents to stay vigilant and avoid eating in public places. The medical staff has also suggested drinking treated water, though the outbreak is likely due to food contamination.
