Sierra Leone is implementing enhanced measures to contain an ongoing outbreak of Mpox, with 20 cases reported since 13 January. The National Health Service, with support from WHO and partners, is strengthening disease surveillance, case investigation, and clinical care. A shipment of 61,300 vaccine doses is expected in the coming weeks, targeting high-risk groups, including health-care workers. WHO has provided essential laboratory reagents, PCR kits, and personal protective equipment for diagnosis and infection control. In addition, 20 inpatient and 180 outpatient treatment kits have been procured, and technical assistance is provided to response teams. Public awareness campaigns, coordinated by WHO and UNICEF, aim to promote prevention and early medical intervention. 225 health workers have been trained in diagnosis, surveillance, case management, and infection control to ensure rapid response capacity. The outbreak follows a regional increase in Mpox, with 12 African countries battling active cases. WHO continues to provide critical resources to contain the disease and mitigate its impact. Mpox, an orthopoxvirus infection, spreads through close contact and can cause severe illness, requiring urgent public health interventions.
