In Piombino, Livorno province, Italy, work is underway to dismantle the battery of former coking plant furnaces. The demolition process is complicated by the presence of asbestos in the areas to be dismantled. The intervention involves recreating some areas to eliminate any trace of asbestos present, in preparation for dismantling the structures. Before the execution of the dismantling process, the Tuscany North-West health company has requested further details, aiming to ascertain the distribution of asbestos within the areas scheduled for demolition. To this end, a series of core-work was carried out by the company in charge of the works from Jsw Steel Italy. The technical details of the demolition process will be communicated by the on-site technicians, contingent upon the results of area-specific sampling conducted during the reclamation phase. According to Francesco Mangani, the general manager of the aforementioned company, the dismantling and reclamation works of the site will take a minimum period of six months. The demolition plan is to be defined based on the results of further asbestos investigations, which have thus far revealed a lower-than-expected level of asbestos.
