What happened

The General Welfare Directorate of the Lombardy Region has announced the positivity of Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 (Ogawa serotype) in a patient currently hospitalised in Brescia, Italy. This announcement follows confirmation by the Italian Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) through specific analyses. The patient, who travelled from Nigeria, contracted the disease abroad before arrival in Italy, thus classifying this as an imported case. The patient is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with a reserved prognosis, but is reported to be in a responsive state. An epidemiological investigation is underway in collaboration with the local health authorities (ATS Brescia). Close contacts of the infected individual have been identified; however, they do not present symptoms and will be subjected to preventive laboratory testing. Furthermore, the health surveillance measures already in place will continue. The Lombardy Region is collaborating with the ATS Brescia, the ISS, and the Ministry of Health to monitor the situation. The health authorities have stated that there are currently no public health issues.
