Greenpeace and other environmental groups intend to take legal action against the European Commission for labelling nuclear power and natural gas as climate-friendly investments in the EU taxonomy. Environmentalists argue that this label would direct more investments towards a harmful energy source, which goes against the purpose of the taxonomy designed to help the EU meet its climate change targets. A European Commission spokesman said the EU executive had taken note of the legal action, but declined to comment further. The Commission has previously said that gas and nuclear plants must meet “strict conditions” to obtain the EU’s green label, including an emissions cap for gas plants.
