Monza: discovery of a hazardous waste dump

The Guardia di Finanza of Monza, also supported by drones, identified a large private area in the municipality of Nova Milanese, Province of Monza and Brianza, Italy, used for the uncontrolled storage of all types of waste. The operation covered an area of more than 2,400 square metres. It resulted in the seizure of more than 1.5 tonnes of mixed hazardous and non-hazardous special waste: iron and plastic materials, wood, insulating panels, plumbing fixtures from construction work, as well as fibreglass panels, an LPG cylinder, six illegal buildings used to store materials, and numerous barrels of empty glass containers. In one of the illegal warehouses, the military discovered eight petrol and diesel tanks containing approximately 183 litres of petroleum products and 47 empty tanks. The Guardia di Finanza, with the Monza Fire Brigade, established that operations involving the transfer of flammable liquids were being carried out in the area without the minimum safety measures required. An area manager was reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Monza for unauthorised waste management, illegal construction, failure to report explosive or flammable materials, and theft of diesel and petrol.
