What happened

The transfer of the remaining 141 drums of radioactive waste from the Cemerad depot in Statte, Taranto, to the Casaccia plant of Nucleco, SOGIN-controlled, has been completed. This event represents a significant step in the management of hazardous waste in Italy, contributing to the resolution of a major environmental concern in the country. The waste, which amounts to over 16,600 drums, contained radioactive sources, filters contaminated by the Chernobyl accident, and materials deriving from medical, industrial, and research activities. The collection and management of radioactive waste at the Cemerad site has been the subject of growing concerns about environmental safety and public health. The closure of this repository and the relocation of the waste is a decisive step towards the cleanup of the area and the protection of the surrounding environment. The Casaccia facilities are equipped with advanced technologies for the treatment and storage of hazardous materials, ensuring high safety standards. The effective management of radioactive waste in Italy is a complex issue that requires collaboration between public and private entities, as well as greater awareness among the population.
